Orlando Magic forward Jonathan Isaac decided to stand for the national anthem ahead of Friday’s game against the Brooklyn Nets. The former Florida State Seminole and first-round selection of the Magic in 2017 also decided not to wear a Black Lives Matter T-shirt during the pregame.

He became the first NBA player to not kneel or wear the BLM shirt since the league restarted Thursday night.

“I don’t think kneeling or putting on a T-shirt is the answer, for me personally,” said Isaac, a Naples native, after the game. “For me, Black lives are supported through the gospel, all lives are supported through the gospel.”

Isaac said that during the national anthem he spent that time praying.

“America is the country that I li...

Brutal July presents Florida leaders with big coronavirus questions heading into August

فلوریدا تودی | No comments

July is coming to a close in Florida with nearly three times more coronavirus cases than when the month began and nearly twice as many COVID-19 deaths, marking an alarming escalation in the state’s outbreak.

It was a month that transformed Florida into one of the worst virus hotspots on the globe, putting the state at the center of the debate over how to balance economic and public health.

Gov. Ron DeSantis has been among the least restrictive leaders of a major state or country, eschewing a mask requirement and allowing every business except bars to remain open. His approach largely has been to try to ride out the pandemic with minimal public health mandates.

“I think what we’ve seen is that the virus is i...

BROOKHAVEN, Miss. — A Mississippi man convicted this year in the 2017 killings of eight people appeared in court this week and asked for a new trial. A judge denied the request, saying he will issue a written ruling later.

Willie Cory Godbolt, now 38, was convicted in February of four counts of murder and four counts of capital murder. He received a sentence of life in prison for each murder conviction and a death sentence for each capital murder conviction. Mississippi defines capital murder as a killing committed along with another felony.

On Wednesday, Lincoln County Circuit Judge David Strong heard arguments from Godbolt, his attorneys and prosecutors about whether to grant a new trial, the Daily Leader reported.

Waste Management faces county fines for missing trash pickups due to shortage of drivers

فلوریدا تودی | No comments

Waste Management Inc. will be facing penalties for not performing as required in unincorporated Brevard County — including fines of $50 for every house where the trash hauler missed a scheduled pickup day.

Brevard County Manager Frank Abbate said he plans to implement this and other penalty terms of the county’s contract with Waste Management.

The trash hauler claims a shortage of drivers, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, is causing its performance problems in recent months.

As complaints about Waste Management mounted, County Commission Chairman Bryan Lober called a special meeting of the commission on Thursday afternoon so the board could hear from company officials.
