After successful splashdown of SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, private boats swarm astronauts

فلوریدا تودی | No comments

After SpaceX’s Crew Dragon capsule with NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley successfully splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico Sunday afternoon, several private boats, including one sporting a Trump campaign flag, surrounded the spacecraft as it bobbed in the water.

“That was not what we were anticipating. Of course, we wanted to make sure that there was a clearing for them to land and the Coast Guard did an excellent job of ensuring that, and then of course after they landed the boats just came in, and we need to do a better job next time for sure,” NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine told reporters during a media teleconference Sunday afternoon.

The historic mission, which was the first time American astronauts ha...

NASA astronauts splash down off coast of Florida to end historic SpaceX mission

فلوریدا تودی | No comments

A SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule in orbit retracted its claw from an attached trunk Sunday, releasing the support structure and exposing a massive heat shield designed to protect NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley from the treacherous process of Earth entry.

The spacecraft that departed the International Space Station only 19 hours earlier then performed a critical deorbit burn, placing the duo on an irreversible trajectory toward the Gulf of Mexico. As expected, plasmas that quickly formed around the capsule during re-entry caused a communications blackout as the heat shield kept thousands of degrees at bay and the interior a toasty 85 degrees.

After several callouts to Crew Dragon with no response, Hurley’s signal finall...

Florida Tech to study how Tropical Storm Isaias’ winds impact Satellite Beach house

فلوریدا تودی | No comments

By deploying wind sensors across Satellite Beach, Florida Institute of Technology researchers hope Tropical Storm Isaias will help engineers understand how fierce gusts damage homes within suburban neighborhoods.

About 9 a.m. Sunday, “a little R2-D2-looking unit” took a commanding position near the dune line at the Sand Castle oceanfront condominium complex, said Steven Lazarus, a meteorologist and Florida Tech professor.

This stubby-shaped device is a ZephIR 300, which uses lidar (a pulsed laser) to measure wind speeds up to 1,000 feet above the ground.

Two hours later, a Florida Coastal Monitoring Program crew erected a portable 10-meter weather tower a few feet from the ZephIR 300...

‘Typical Florida’: Paradise Beach visitors unfazed by Tropical Storm Isaias’ approach

فلوریدا تودی | No comments

Melbourne resident Don Marrufo hopped out of bed at 5 a.m. Sunday to prep his home for Isaias, which had been forecast to potentially strike Cape Canaveral as a Category 1 landfalling hurricane.

Instead, Isaias weakened to a tropical storm overnight — and slowed to a crawl off the South Florida coastline.

“Made breakfast — cinnamon rolls — instead. And swept the floor,” Marrufo said, smiling.

“Typical Florida. Unexpected weather,” he said.

Marrufo and his fiancée, Verlaine Tipton, took their chiweenie, Zeus, on a beach walk about 9 a.m. Sunday at popular Paradise Beach Park near Indialantic. Isaias’ threat was apparent: Only 16 people were on the sand from the lifeguard shack southward, as far as the eye could see.
